Studies
show communication skills are the single best predictor of
school success and research indicates before 30 months of
age the correlation between communication skills and IQ are
so close they can’t be separated. The earlier the
intervention, the greater the benefit.
Language delays can be evident prior to three years of age,
but delays in language development and articulation disorder
after three can benefit from direct therapeutic
intervention. The child and the community are best
served if these delays are addressed before the child starts
to school. |

| Fluency
disorders are more prevalent in young males than
females. Dysfluencies should be evaluated at any age
the child or family expresses concern about stuttering
symptoms. Stuttering can be distinguished from normal
childhood dysfluencies through assessment of spontaneous
speech. If a fluency disorder is diagnosed, age
appropriate therapy is available for preschool through adult
populations. |
In
adolescence, young adults can participate in various
types of vocal abuse. Voice disorders can also
result from habitual resonance, pitch, phrasing and
breath support problems. Medical etiologies
can have can have voice components that will
interfere with full recovery if not corrected.
Speech pathology can help restore voice qualities
and avoid further damage.
Speech pathology services for adults and geriatric
patients usually address communication problems
related to stroke, head injury, or swallowing
problems. Hearing problems also contribute to
communication problems for this population. Whatever
the age, whatever the speech deficit, Winston
Rehabilitation Services can provide the needed care. |
