Winston Medical Center celebrates American Heart Month!
Winston Medical Center celebrated “National Wear Red Day” on Friday, February 7th to help build awareness of heart disease in both men and women. Staff wore red in support of the day.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, heart disease is the leading cause of death in the United States and is a major cause of disability. The most common heart disease in the United States is coronary heart disease, which often appears as a heart attack.
“Every year, about 715,000 Americans suffer from a heart attack. About 600,000 people die from heart disease in the United States each year. That is 1 out of every 4 deaths! The good news is that heart disease is preventable and controllable through behaviors including eating well and being physically active. By taking action now, YOU can help be a part of the solution,” stated Angelee Mayo, WMC Dietician. Mrs. Mayo shares eight heart healthy tips to help decrease your chances of heart disease:
1. Control your portion sizes.
2. Eat more fruits and vegetables.
3. Select whole grain foods.
4. Limit unhealthy fats and cholesterol.
5. Choose low fat protein sources.
6. Reduce salt in your food.
7. Plan ahead and create daily menus
8. DO allow yourself an occasional treat.
“Once you know which foods to eat, you’ll be on your way towards a heart healthy diet! Incorporate these eight tips into your life and you will learn that heart healthy eating is both doable and enjoyable! By planning a few simple substitutions, you can eat with your heart in mind,” Mayo stated.
